Reputation of diamond jewellery industry will depend on laboratories’ technical advances.

The global reputation of the diamond jewellery industry in future will depend on the efficacy with which laboratory groups can detect undisclosed synthetic diamonds, lab executives say. A second major technological frontier in diamonds is blockchain, a secure database that reliably records sequences of transactions.

Laboratory groups are engaged in a technology race to improve detection of synthetic diamonds amid fears of harm to the global industry if diamond jewellery were found to contain undisclosed synthetics. The concern over la-grown or synthetic diamonds, surrounds an unscrupulous practice of mixing undisclosed synthetic diamonds in packages of natural small diamonds called melee.

A key focus of the technology race now under way between competing laboratory groups is their capability to detect undisclosed synthetics in the smallest of diamonds. GIA’s grading laboratories use advanced instrumentation to screen every diamond submitted to it to determine if the stone is natural, synthetic or treated.

Another major technology set to revolutionise diamond transactions is blockchain technology. In essence, a blockchain is a distributed and secure database that reliably records sequences of transactions, which cannot be edited or changed after a transaction has taken place. Blockhain eliminates the need for third-party intermediaries by establishing the integrity of the corresponding party, before it allows a new block (or transaction) to be added to the chain.
